Sex and the City... of Amsterdam - Partea II

April 2, 2017

Asa cum am spus si in prima parte a articolului Sex and the City... of Amsterdam (click aici), Amsterdam este un oras al erotismului, cunoscut pentru cartierul Red Light District.

As I mentioned in the first part of the article Sex and the City... of Amsterdam (click here), Amsterdam is a city of eroticism, known for its Red Light District neighbourhood. Apart from prostitutes, sex shops or porn theatres, its three main attractions are the Museum of eroticism, the Museum of prostitution and the Museum of sex, each of them bringing something new to the table.

1. Muzeul erotismului:

1. The Museum of eroticism:

The Museum of eroticism, unlike the other thematic museums, focused less on the history of sex and more on plastic mannequins miming different scenes, more or less pornographic. In a room decorated like a children's room, with low chairs shaped like mushrooms, a cartoon was showing. After a few seconds we realised it was an old porn cartoon about an evil witch eating princes with her vagina so that none of them could get to the princess, which she kept locked up in a castle with a chastity belt... That room was definitely not for children!

2. Muzeul prostitutiei:

 2. The Museum of prostitution:

Out of all three museums, I think this was my favourite because it had a great interactive part, not just historic data. One of the museum's ideas, which I found funny, was a "panel of sins". Visitors from all around the world would write their weirdest sexual adventures on a piece of paper and then they would pin it on the panel. I really enjoyed reading some of the stories. In another room you had lots of objects used by prostitutes at your disposal - from harnesses to crosses to which you could tie yourself while practising BDSM - and in the end you even had the chance of experimenting how a real prostitute feels when she is watched by passers. You would wear lots of masks and accessories, sit on a chair behind a window and wait to see the reaction of people from the outside. Some of them would make obscene gestures and sexual invitations, while others would just stop and watch you, but either way the feeling was strange.

3. Muzeul sexului

3. The Museum of sex:

This museum mainly focused on the history of sex, particularly on people's perception of sex over time. Each room has a different name (Mata Hari, Marquis de Sade, Rudolf Valentino, Oscar Wilde, Marquise de Pompadour etc.) and specific background noises depending on the theme. At the entrance there was a large statue of Venus, goddess of love and "protector" of the museum, along with other ancient phallic statues or statues depicting erotic scenes. In one of the rooms there was even an exhibition of rare old photos with porn illustrations.
