Eating Waffles in Brussels

RO: Cand aud "Belgia", primul lucru la care ma gandesc sunt vafele, asa ca in scurta vizita la Brussels nu am putut sa nu degust aceste dulciuri! Oriunde intorceam privirea vedeam cate un stand care vindea vafe. Cata tentatie! Vafele belgiene (numite si gofre sau gaufre in franceza) sunt ca niste clatite groase, patrate, cu niste denivelari, care se servesc fie simple, fie cu diverse bunatati pe ele, de la ciocolata topita, la banane sau branza. 

 

 

EN: When I hear "Belgium", the first thing that comes to my mind are waffles, so I couldn't resist trying some during my short visit to Brussels! Wherever I looked I saw a stand selling waffles. Big temptation! Belgian waffles (also called gofres or gaufres in French) look like thick, square, uneven pancakes, served either plain or with different toppings, from melted chocolate to bananas or cheese.

 

 

 

 

 

RO: Stiati ca? 

 

Vafele au aparut pentu prima data in secolul al XIII-lea. Un fierar, inspirat de forma fagurelui de albina, a realizat un fier cu acelasi model, pe care ulterior l-a incins si l-a folosit pentru a oferi vafelor denivelarile lor celebre.  Fierarul a vandut inventia brutarilor si astfel noile delicatese au facut turul strazilor comerciale. Maurice Vermersch si sotia sa, un cuplu de la Bruxelles, au fost primii care au adaugat drojdie la reteta chiar inainte de al Doilea Razboi Mondial. Prietenii si familia lor au fost atât de incantati de rezultatul pe care cuplul Vermersche l-a realizat, incat cei doi si-au deschis mai multe restaurante specializate în vafe si si-au promovat inventia si la Targul Mondial din 1964, în Queens, New York. Astfel vafele au devenit celebre in intreaga lume, drept delicatese cu specific belgian! 

 

 

EN: Did you know?

 

Waffles first appeared in the 13th century. A blacksmith, inspired by the shape of the honeycomb, made a piece of iron in the same shape which he then heated in order to give waffles their famous uneven appearance. The blacksmith sold his invention to bakers and thus the new delicacies appeared on shopping streets. Maurice Vermersch and his wife, a couple from Brussels, were the first to add yeast to the recipe even before the Second World War. Their friends and family were so pleased with the result that the two of them opened multiple restaurants specializing in waffles and promoted the invention at the 1964 World Fair in Queens, New York. Thus, waffles became known around the world as Belgian delicacies.

 

 

 

 

  

 

 

RO: In Brussels ne-am oprit la un mic stand cu vafe din centrul orasului. Avea atatea sortimente de vafe incat a fost greu sa ma decid. Puteam alege o vafa simpla, eventual doar cu zahar pudra, o vafa cu un singur topping (de exemplu sirop de artar) sau o vafa complexa cu frisca, fructe si topping! Hm... Oare ce sa aleg? Normal ca am ales o vafa cu de toate! Frisca, ciocolata si capsuni! 

 

 

EN: In Brussels we stopped at a small waffle stand in the city centre. There were so many varieties of waffles that it was hard for me to decide. I could choose a plain waffle, just with sugar, a waffle with one topping (for example maple syrup) or a complex waffle with whipped cream, fruit and a topping! Hm... What should I choose? Of course I went for and all-in-one waffle: whipped cream, chocolate and strawberries!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

RO: Ceilalti au optat pentru niste vafe mai simple; Alex a incercat doar cu capsuni si topping de ciocolata, iar Dan doar cu frisca si, din nou, celebrul topping de ciocolata. De ce toata lumea alege acest topping?...

 

 

EN: The others opted for simpler waffles; Alex tried one only with strawberries and chocolate topping and Dan tried one only with whipped cream and, again, the famous chocolate topping. Why is everybody choosing this topping?

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

RO: Vafe! Vafe! Vafe! Cred ca m-as intoarce in Belgia doar pentru ele! Si pentru conurile cu cartofi prajiti....

 

EN: Waffles! Waffles! Waffles! I think I would go back to Belgium just for them! And for the French fries in a cone...
