Dreaming about Mexico

February 23, 2017

Today I "travelled" to Mexico through a short visit to the new Mexican themed restaurant, SALSA. Once I stepped inside, I was welcomed by a décor with traditional motifs such as a sombrero hung by the door, or a beautiful collection of cactuses (my favourite plant), which instantly made me think about this country.

Multa culoare, chilli, tacos, mustata, chitara, sombrero, cactusi. Ce altceva mai lipsea?

We sat down at a table and we received the menus, also in a Mexican-themed design. A lot of colour, chili, tacos, moustaches, guitares, sombreros, cactuses. Was there anything missing?

After we looked through the menu I decided on a chicken enchiladas and Alex ordered three portions of tacos. Two months ago, I had the chance of meeting two medicine students from Mexico - Lily and Diego - who, during one of their days spent in Romania, cooked enchiladas for the group of Romanians who welcomed them into their country. I really enjoyed it then and when I saw the same dish at Salsa restaurant I wanted to try and see if it tasted the same as the original.

Enchiladas means "covered in hot pepper sauce" (although the sauce at Salsa restaurant was not so hot). For this recipe, Mexicans use a sauce made from a mix of hot peppers; this sauce covers the corn tortillas filled with minced beef or chicken and different vegetables. I chose the chicken option, which was delicious.

Tacos, the specialty chosen by Alex, is a simple Mexican dish, also based on a sauce (though not necessarily hot pepper, usually avocado), corn tortilla and a filling of minced beef and vegetables. This time however, the tortilla was no longer rolled, with the content in plain sight.

The Mexican specialties were accompanied by two sauces, which were unlike anything we had ever tried before. One of them was green salsa, the other was red chipotle, and their unique flavours gave an exotic taste to our meal.

Since I am in love with international restaurants, and especially because I adore the energy of Mexico, Salsa is at the moment among my favourite restaurants in Iasi. Although I was slightly disappointed by the rather small variety of dishes on the menu, I appreciated that the one I tried was similar to the one cooked by my Mexican friends, Lily and Diego - meaning they were authentic. I definitely cannot wait to come back here and try the rest of the culinary offers of Salsa!
